Abstract

A new photorefractive polymer allows easy fabrication of passive components such as optical waveguide circuits and waveguide gratings for integrated optics by illumination with near-UV radiation. The polymer consists of a reactive acrylate system highly doped with an UV photoinitiator. High-index fragments of the photoinitiator are fixed to the polymeric matrix by aphotochemical reaction (photofixing). Additional cross-linking hardens the polymeric matrix. The unreacted photoinitiator is removed by annealing at 100°C. High-resolution phase gratings have been recorded optically in thin waveguiding films. The resolution is better than 1200 lines/mm, the refractive-index change attains values of 1.8 × 10−2.
