Abstract

Optical compensators of the rotating-plate principle are widely used for their simplicity in motion picture equipment of various types. Despite many attempts, little improvement of their optical performance has been achieved. Some competent proposals to this aim and their optical limitations are briefly discussed. A novel type of compound compensator is theoretically investigated, utilizing two refracting “plates” whose indexes are respectively greater and less than one. It is shown how such a device can be practically realized and what requirements exist for the selection of suitable optical materials. Inasmuch as materials available at present permit the aberrations to be reduced by more than a factor of five, the proposed compound compensator seems to promise substantial improvement within practical reach.
