Abstract

Color temperatures of sources that do not match a blackbody at any temperature are determined by use of “isotemperature” lines drawn in some chromaticity diagram. Those lines were derived from conjectures, not from any observational data. The only known observational data of the kind are at least 35 years old, but are published here for the first time. Recent CIE recommendation of two new color-difference formulas implies that the isotemperature lines should be correspondingly changed. The changes indicate that color temperatures of some common light sources should be several hundred degrees different than their present ratings. Observations are advocated, to determine whether those changes are appropriate.
