Abstract

We consider the binary representation of hexagonally sampled continuous-tone images. The method of error diffusion is extended for the hexagonal lattice. Aliasing artifacts as well as the spatial patterns generated with this method are compared with those obtained in the binarization of rectangularly sampled images. The nonideal printing process is analyzed for this lattice structure, and the binarization process is modified so as to suppress dot overlap and minimize tone degradations. On a nonideal printer it is shown that binarization in a hexagonal lattice is more robust than in a rectangular one in tone preservation.
