Abstract

We apply a three-dimensional beam-propagation algorithm to a half-coupler constituted by a single-mode fiber interacting through its evanescent field with a semi-infinite medium of index nl. We calculate the fiber transmission losses as a function of various parameters such as the remaining fiber cladding thickness, the index value nl, and the interaction length. A constant fiber bend is also introduced. Finally, we plot the map of the field, pointing out the existence of guided or leaky modes depending on the values of the parameters.
