Abstract

Zhang et al. [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 6, 1601 ( 1988)] derived the Lorentz–Lorenz formula for a dielectric-magnetic substance by modeling its molecules into electric and magnetic dipoles that depend separately on the local electric and magnetic fields, respectively. They eventually obtained a result [Eq. (20) in their paper] that is obvious because they used (independent) electrostatic and magnetostatic models earlier in their paper to identify and μ separately.
