Abstract

Polarization analysis relevant to electron–photon coincidence scattering studies is presented with an emphasis on the determination of the absolute value of the retardation and the handedness of the retarder. Knowledge of the retarder is particularly important in the analysis of collisional dynamics, as the handedness determines the direction (sign) of the component of angular momentum transferred to the atom perpendicular to the scattering plane and the retardation determines the magnitude of the momentum transfer. A discussion of uncertainties and experimental considerations relevant to visible polarimetry in polarization-correlation scattering studies is also presented. Confirmation of the technique for determining the sign of the angular-momentum transfer is presented for electron impact excitation of the 31P state of helium.
